Ratatan beginner guide: controls & first upgrades

If commands keep missing, calibrate input timing first. If commands work but your army keeps falling, equip your drops and spend camp materials before another run. Welcome Mode can ease solo play, but it is disabled in co-op. [1]

Your first-run checklist

  1. Choose a leader you enjoy. You can change your Ratatan at camp; an early choice is not a reason to restart your save. AppMedia’s Early Access guide describes this selection loop. [2]
  2. Check timing before changing your build. Open Options → Audio → Calibration. Use the setup you actually play with; a timing adjustment addresses input judgement, not low damage. The setting path is from the official full-release FAQ. [1]
  3. Learn the command prompts in the tutorial. Rhythm commands direct Cobuns while you position the Ratatan freely. We do not print a universal button chart because controller prompts vary. Check the current in-game Help and your bindings. [3]
  4. Return to camp with a purpose. Look at newly collected weapons, Quest Board rewards and available adventure upgrades before setting off again. [2]

What is stopping your run?

What you noticeCheck nextWhy this comes first
Commands miss even when the fight is calmCalibration and the displayed command sequence. [1]More army strength does not correct input timing.
Commands land, but Cobuns do little damageAt camp, inspect the weapons actually equipped on your Cobuns; compare new drops. [2]Finding a weapon and equipping it are different steps.
You repeat the same wall after returning to campClaim Quest Board rewards, then inspect Ratatan Dock and Support Desk upgrades. [2][1]Turn the previous run’s materials into permanent preparation.
Solo is overwhelmingTry Welcome Mode. It can be toggled and does not change the story. [1]This option does not carry into co-op.
You cleared a run but the next episode is lockedCheck Goddess Games Oath Level and story conditions. [1]A progression gate needs a different check from a combat loss.

This is an editorial troubleshooting order, not a tested optimum build. Change the item that matches your symptom rather than spending on unrelated upgrades.

A useful order for each camp visit

Rewards → equipment → facilities → next objective. First claim completed Quest Board rewards. Then inspect each useful weapon drop: even weapons of the same type can have different levels or effects. Finally review the Ratatan Dock for adventure strength and the Support Desk for unlocks. AppMedia documents this loop in September 2025; the October 2026 FAQ still recommends those two facilities and stronger equipment. We do not carry over its old prices or balance numbers. [2][1]

For a larger starting army, follow the Cobun recruitment and formation checks. For a first clear, the FAQ points to Oath Level 1 or higher for Episode 2. For Episode 3, also check the known gate-display problem before treating all collected melody icons as proof of completion. [1]

Give the next attempt one clear purpose

Use a run to answer one question: are commands registering, is your equipped army stronger, or is a story condition still missing? If rhythm input works, focus on positioning and reading an enemy’s attack rather than repeating attacks through every animation. The official description gives you direct movement; AppMedia recommends learning enemy motions and using defensive actions. [3][2]
